I love jazz piano. I want to learn how to improvise. I have been playing piano for six years, but I can only do a little bit of improvising. The songs i play are mostly classical and my piano teacher teaches classical. Are there any good books for learning jazz improv? Thanks!

Any tips for using modes in jazz piano?…?

I’m a classical pianist, but I really enjoy playing jazz and keyboard stuff as well. For jazz/blues music, all I know is the blues scale. It’s served me well, but there are only so many ways one can arrange six notes…

My piano teacher told me that modal scales (lydian, mixolydian, etc) are used in jazz. It makes sense, because I often hear notes in jazz piano solos that aren’t in the blues scale, and nearly every jazz pianist I listen to seems to use the same kind of notes. I know the theory behind modal scales, but when I go to apply them in a simple jazz song, it just sounds weird. Is there some kind of special technique I should be using? Do I need to practice fooling around with them more in order to find my own sound? Do I need to hitchhike down to the Deep South to learn in the birthplace of the blues? (I hope not, because that’s a long way from Canada.) Thank you.

Help inspire me to keep playing piano?

I’m taking lessons right now. The thing is, I love rock music, and I also love orchestral music. It seems like all of the music I love does not involve the piano. Also, I love almost all music, but the type of music I don’t like includes the slow jazz that my piano teacher is into. I also really hate soft rock (that I wouldn’t even consider rock) and it tends to have piano in it. This might be because my mom always forced it upon me (she always listens to it) so there for I hated it growing up. In other words, I know there has to be some cool music out there with piano, and I do love soft ballads played by the piano, though the only ones I hear are from movie or t.v. show soundtracks. Does anyone have anything that I should listen to that might inspire me to keep playing the piano? Right now, I’m not very good, I’ve only been playing for 5 months.

I'm extremely nervous for playing the piano at my school talent show, any tips?

My school talent show is going to take place in June (yes I know it’s still far away). My piano teacher and parents want me to play at the talent show, so today I grabbed the audition slip. I haven’t realized until now how scared I am to play in front of my school. I’m going to be playing at a piano festival over the weekend and I’m not nervous at all. I’m actually excited XD but when I recently played at a concert my hands were shaking and my heart was leaping out of my body! I swear that i felt like that. It was basically my first concert then (although I’ve been playing the piano for about 3-4 years). I’m twelve and will be playing a jazz piece at the talent show that is pretty popular but I’m not going to post the title. My piano isn’t the best piano so it sounds different when I play on other pianos, and I hate practicing on it.
But I’m just really nervous for the talent show, I’m scared of what the kids will think of me (I’m in middle school by the way). I really want to play the piano though, but I’m nervous. What can I do to get over this fear (please don’t say to think of the audience in their underwear or anything like that becuase it doesn’t work for me).
If you can tell me something that can mE make feel friendlike with the audience or anything that helps you in talent shows then thank you so much!

what do you think of the Billy Joel song "we did not start the fire"?

this has to be one of the greatest songs of all times:
We didn’t start the fire
It was always burning, since the world’s been turning
We didn’t start the fire
No, we didn’t light it but we’re trying to fight it.

Billy Joel was born 9 May, 1949, in New York. As the son of a talented musician in a well-off family, he was naturally pushed into taking piano lessons at age four. Unlike his strictly Catholic father, Billy proved to be something of a rebel during his formative years, dismissing the classical music and musical theory that his piano teacher was foisting on him and failing to graduate from high school due to repeated truancy.

Joel’s talent for jazz piano and organ quickly won him favour. Producer Shadow Morton signed Billy’s first group, The Echoes, but they never played a live gig. Rumour has it that Billy played piano for Morton’s other group, the Shangri-Las, on their worldwide hit, ‘Leader of the Pack’, but this has never been verified. Billy’s solo career

How do you do this on piano when playing jazz?

So I asked my piano teacher how to do this one thing on the piano (I play jazz, I’m 14), but she won’t teach me how until I master this one other thing. Pshh. I’m pretty good and understand complicated stuff so you can throw complicated answers at me. Ha ha. Well anyway here’s an example of it in this video:

The thing I want to know how to do starts at 2:38 or 2:39 when she is doing that thing going down the piano really fast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx7KM4apb9A

Thanks!
