I play piano, I’ve been playing for about 9 years, (I’m at AMEB grade 7) and I was at a party the other week and there was a piano there and my mates were like, "Play us a song!" but I only knew jazz or classical songs, nothing that they knew.
What are some good advanced piano songs I could learn that everyone knows and could sing along to?

Where are some good, basic piano improv sites?

I don’t want to buy a course or a video (unless you can recommend a really, really good one), but just learn a little about runs and fillers, and the things needed to jazz up a simple song.

(-: I’d be glad to hear personal tips, too.

Are there any good piano instruction videos available?

I’m a guitarist, and I’m really into jazz. I have no desire to learn classical music. I DO want to play Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson. That’s about as classical as I want to go.

what would be a good piano or key board for me to learn?

i’m 20 years old if that helps? style i want to play is jazz

Who's in the right and who's in the wrong? You be the judge?

I teach piano.

A new student just had her first lesson today. Her lesson goes for 30 minutes.

I wanted to get her straight into things asap. And the thing is, you can’t play if you don’t know what notes are and all that basic jazz. So I started off with theory (teaching her how to sit at the piano, what the notes are, what the treble clef is, what the bass clef is)

So I spent 3/4 of the lesson teaching her about these things. 1/4 of the lesson was spent on me testing her about notes (I’d say ‘play the note G’, and then she’d play it)

She and her father left quite satisfied (at least, that what it appeared to be like, they were smiling and they looked pleased). They said they would be coming next week.

After they left, my parents started dissing me about how I talked too much and completely made them lose interest. I insisted to them that you can’t play piano without the theory, which is the very basics.

It’s like laying out the concrete before building the house – the theory is like the concrete (quite boring, but fundamental) and the house is like playing the piano (much more fun and interesting).

They ignored me and said that I still didn’t need to teach her theory for most of the lesson. They said that I should have taught her theory for half of the lesson and let her play for the other half.

They also said that I should have spent some time showing off my piano playing skills (which I think is a waste of time, esp that piano lessons are not free. The time is supposed to be used on her learning, not me showing off)

They said that most of the time we just sat there in silence doing nothing, while in actual fact, I was writing down what book she needed to buy and all the theory stuff she needed to remember.

I kept insisting that it was right that I taught her theory most of the time and then let her play a little bit. But my parents yelled and me and told me I was up myself and I thought I knew everything. Annoyed, I stormed off. And now they’re making fun of me in the kitchen.

Just keep in mind that my parents aren’t musicians and know little about music.

Who is right? Me or my parents?
The next lesson, I am planning her to play most of the time, as most of the theory fundamentals are out of the way and she will have a book.

What's the best system for memorizing piano chords and their inversions?

It seems such a difficult task to memorize all piano chords and their inversions. I’m going at it slowly, as I learn new pieces. Is there any systematic way to learn them faster? (I am studying mostly jazz voicings, open voicings etc….not your normal root 3 5 chords.) Thanks!

What are the chances of me getting in this school?

It’s a performing arts high school and i have been in chorus sense 8th grade and i have been in show choir for 3 years. I have been in 4 2 act productions and i can play piano, like i know the notes… never had a lesson/. I can do broadway style dancing like charlston, jazz square, etc.

My grades are porr…

Which one should I learn?

In my home school group they have a band; Beginner, Jazz, and Advanced. I have learned piano so now I know notes now and I want to join the Beginner band. What instrument do you think I should learn? I don’t want something common like trumpet or something big like a tuba.

Jazz piano tutorial – improvisation on A Foggy Day

A jazz piano improvisation tutorial based on A Foggy Day (chord progression below!), by George Gershwin. In this tutorial I look at basic jazz piano techniques such as creating complex chords, developing right hand runs and the different types of bass part and left hand you can use. My view of jazz piano and piano improvisation in general is that although it isn’t necessarily easy, it’s not some sort of God-given gift: you can learn the basics fairly easily, and after that it’s just a case of doing as much practice as you can to become fluent. It’s also really important to develop your own style: my approach to piano is quite blues oriented, and that’s really reflected in the way I play jazz, which is closer to mainstream and swing styles than to more contemporary “cool” styles. If you have any questions on this particular improvisation, or any other aspect of jazz piano, feel free to ask. By the way, here’s the chord progression so you can get straight to the keyboard and start improvising for yourself: F | Ebm | Gm7 | C | F | Abm7 | Gm7 | C | F | F7 | Bb | Bbm | F | D7 | Gm7 | C | F | Ebm | Gm7 | C | F | Abm7 | Gm7 | C | F | F7 | Bb | Bbm | F | Gm7 | F | Gm7 | Dm7 | G | Gm7 | C … One thing I don’t really mention in the video is that this is a pretty interesting chord progression to improvise on. There’s a reasonable amount of repetitition, and it’s in a reasonably easy key for pianists (F major). At the same time there are some really interesting chords that you can
