What are some good jazz songs for a Gr3 classical pianist?

I’ve been playing classical piano for about four years now, and I’ve just passed my Gr3 practical exam, but the most difficult piece I’ve learned so far is Fur Elise (which is Grade 6 or 7, I think.) I’ve been listening to a bit of jazz recently, and I’d like to try and play a few jazz tunes, but my teacher doesn’t have many and I have to get the sheet music myself.

Does anyone know of some good reasonably simple jazz pieces?

Jazz songs for flute that actually sound like real jazz rather than classical pieces?

hi i’ve played the flute for quite a few years and i’m roughly grade 6 standard. i play flute in the school jazz band (we did cantaloupe island and birdland) and know quite a bit about jazz considering i have no jazz training (i was picked for an improv solo for the first/only jazz band concert and there were only 2 solos). I play whatever abrsm puts in the grade books jazz-wise on piano, but want to learn a cool solo piece on flute.

i looked on youtube and all the flute jazz pieces didn’t really have a jazz vibe – they all seemed really rehearsed and not really like proper jazz – no blues notes, bent 3rds, slides – just straight quavers or triplets (or even rests). the sax pieces always sound so much more jazzy.

are there any really good jazz flute pieces i could learn? preferably actually written in the times when jazz was popular :)

thanks xxx

Is playing and improvising jazz easy to accomplish?

I have been classically trained in piano for over 10 years and have been playing jazz pieces for a while, however never really improvisation wise….
Must one be especially trained in improvisational jazz? Or can I accomplish it by learning all the jazz chords, listening to more jazz pieces and playing more jazz?
thankyou!

Is jazz on piano harder to play than contemporary or classical?

I’m a Freshman this year in High School, and I’d like to try out for my school’s jazz band. The only problem is that I’ve never really played any jazz on the piano before. I’ve only ever played contemporary and classical pieces for the 5 years I’ve been taking piano lessons because my teacher did not want to teach me to play any jazz pieces (she only taught classical, I found contemporary on my own). I’m afraid that once I get the sheet music, I wont be able to learn a completely different style of music in two weeks before the auditions. So, are there any "tricks" in learning jazz? Will it be hard for me to play this style if I haven’t before? Any feedback would help, thanks!

Suggestions for Jazz Piano pieces?

I’m attending the "Fifth Annual Snow College/Juilliard Jazz Workshop" on July 6-11. Juilliard jazz faculty like Carl Allen and Ben Wolfe come down to Snow College for a week and teach kids about jazz and it’s awesome. Part of the process is splitting off into combos to practice and play songs with during the week, and to put you in combos you go through a "soft audition" at the beginning of the workshop where you play some jazz stuff like scales and basic twelve-bar stuff and based on your skill, you’re placed in a combo with players of your skill. The official guidelines say:

More advanced players should be prepared to play:
-A 12 bar blues in B flat, C minor, F and E flat (various tempos, melody and solo). This should be a jazz standard (i.e. Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, etc.)
-Major and minor scales
-Up tempo standard (of their choice)
-Sight reading

I play piano, and I’ve got all of those twelve-bar blues forms down and all the scales and I’m a decent sight reader. The only problem is, I’m having a really hard time finding two songs to play (a "twelve-bar jazz standard" and an "up tempo standard"). I’ve looked at stuff like Boogie a la King by Nat King Cole and 18th Street Stomp by Fats Waller and other stuff but I can’t find sheet music anywhere, and with only a month I’d rather not sit down and transcribe these songs by ear (I could do it if I absolutely had to, though). I also have a book of "Jump Swing" songs but they’re kind of lame and watered-down with lame piano-bass lines or weird boogie riffs that don’t fit the bill, but I could maybe also turn to one of those in a pinch. I’ve also got a fake book full of jazz standards that I could turn to if I had to.

I’m asking if anybody has any suggestions on good solo-piano jazz pieces that fit the requirements (twelve-bar standard, up-tempo standard), sound good and are fun to play and relatively easy without sounding lame (difficulty is not an issue normally, but I only have a month). Can anyone help me out here?
