I am faced with the choice between taking classical piano or jazz piano private lessons. I would love to play showtunes on the piano, however I want to know which type of lesson would be better for this. I used to play violin a while ago, and self taught myself some basic melodies from musicals on the piano, however I have since forgotten how to read sheet music. Which form: classical or jazz, would be better for learning musical theatre show tunes? Or does it really not matter and most important is learning how to read the music?

Thanks for your help, and 10 points to the best answerer!
Have a great day.

Also — anyone know of any books with great show tune sheet music in them? From all different shows?
Thanks to the answerers, but can anyone provide a back-up reasoning as to why classical would be a better start…?

The Real Book question.?

I’ve been playing classical piano for quite a few years and now I’m interested in learning jazz piano. I learned about The Real Book while searching for jazz books. My question is, which version should I buy? I know that Hal Leonard has made several "legal" versions of it. Also, what other books could be useful if I want learn jazz (and also blues)?

Jazz piano tutorial – improvisation on A Foggy Day

A jazz piano improvisation tutorial based on A Foggy Day (chord progression below!), by George Gershwin. In this tutorial I look at basic jazz piano techniques such as creating complex chords, developing right hand runs and the different types of bass part and left hand you can use. My view of jazz piano and piano improvisation in general is that although it isn’t necessarily easy, it’s not some sort of God-given gift: you can learn the basics fairly easily, and after that it’s just a case of doing as much practice as you can to become fluent. It’s also really important to develop your own style: my approach to piano is quite blues oriented, and that’s really reflected in the way I play jazz, which is closer to mainstream and swing styles than to more contemporary “cool” styles. If you have any questions on this particular improvisation, or any other aspect of jazz piano, feel free to ask. By the way, here’s the chord progression so you can get straight to the keyboard and start improvising for yourself: F | Ebm | Gm7 | C | F | Abm7 | Gm7 | C | F | F7 | Bb | Bbm | F | D7 | Gm7 | C | F | Ebm | Gm7 | C | F | Abm7 | Gm7 | C | F | F7 | Bb | Bbm | F | Gm7 | F | Gm7 | Dm7 | G | Gm7 | C … One thing I don’t really mention in the video is that this is a pretty interesting chord progression to improvise on. There’s a reasonable amount of repetitition, and it’s in a reasonably easy key for pianists (F major). At the same time there are some really interesting chords that you can

What are some really good, classic jazz songs?

Or CDs.

Think Billie Holiday’s "Easy To Love" and "Pennies From Heaven." Songs with or without vocals. Older songs are just as wonderful. I love jazz piano. Please, no free form stuff. I like the classic jazz sound.

My very dear friend is great jazz musician. He is proffesional musician with 20 year experience in playing jazz piano. But he’s living in country where it’s not essential to be under label. Now he want to work under label in England or USA. What’s the music buisness etiquette in thouse countries. How he can show his interest to be under those labels in acceptable way for thouse countries? How much of musician initiative is considared as polite and good? Is it needed to write CV in thouse countries for musicians too?
