I’ve been playing piano for about 9 years and love jazz music and would love to be able to play jazz piano freely and not so technically (or coming at it with a classical mind that I have now). The only thing that’s holding me back [besides money ;) ] is I’m not too good at improvisation. I took my Keyboard Harmony exam (playing not written) and I can tell you it didn’t go well, I’m not even sure if I passed yet but I wouldn’t really count on it. I’m so nervous that because I had so much trouble with this type of Harmony which has been said to be a kind of base for Jazz Piano, I won’t have a real chance at learning Jazz Piano. If anyone has studied jazz piano could you tell me if you need to already be good to really learn? Or will practice and studying will become better (once I start studying it with a teacher)?

I have a teacher in mind already, I need to talk to my parents about it still, they know I’m interested but they don’t really know the extent of that. If someone could help me out that would be amazing!
Thanks!

classic music theory and jazz music theory?

i want to learn music theory so i can write my own music on the piano…..is music theory for jazz and music theory for other music different? and if it is, then what is different about it? and also, say i was to learn jazz theory, does that mean i would have trouble making non-jazz music?

I love playing the piano and everyone says I’m very talented but i just don't enjoy it anymore..?

I play classical music from when i was little (for 10 years) but i’m bored of it. Maybe it’s because I’m older now but I don’t know..
my teacher says that it’s just a phase and that i got bored of the songs I’m playing now but this is going on for so long.
my mom says that i should change teachers. I said that I wanted to start playing jazz but i’m not sure if I will like it because jazz is more about like improvisation which I don’t like.
I downloaded some scores of other songs I like like the Titanic and stuff and I really enjoy learning them by myself but I’m afraid that if I don’t do lessons anymore im going to start getting worse and I really don’t want that. And these songs are very easy for my level, and it will get boring. I like doing difficult things but everytime my teacher gives me a new song that needs studying and that I can’t learn very easily like i used to, I give up. i know it’s wrong but I don’t know what to do.
Two years ago in the exams, the examiners said that i play so good that I could skip 2 years and go to the more advanced class, and last year they said that I am the best student in my school
This year, I didn’t even learn 1 single song perfectly. I just learned the technical part but then i never studied at home and every lesson was horrible because I hadn’t done anything at home so we just did the same things.
My dad doesn’t want me to do jazz music at all and he says that classical music is better and that I need to know well classical music so that I can play other types of music later on my life but come on, for 10 whole years I do classical music and I am in the 5th year. I have only 4 years until I get my diploma.. but the thing is, I don’t like the things im doing now and i dont want to do them for 4 whole years just to get a diploma. Piano isn’t like school where you have to learn things. you’re supposed to enjoy learning music.. and i think that i’ve reached a lever where I can start doing different things with music.
My mom keeps saying that I need to decide what Im going to do this year because the exams are in 1 month and I haven’t learned ANYTHING at all.

PLEASE somebody help!! i feel so desperate..

Who is a good Jazz composer?

I’ve played classical piano forever, but have always loved Jazz too. I’ve worked on easy jazz student pieces before, but would really love to learn real Jazz music.
Is there a good Jazz composer or Jazz book you would recommend for an early advanced student? I’d like something challenging but not too challenging.

How do you improvise in jazz?

My school is having auditions for jazz band, so I picked up the piano music to see if maybe I had a shot to get in, even though I’ve never even looked at jazz music before. After looking at the music for a while, someone recognized my obvious confusion and explained to me why there were only notes written in for one hand and chords written on top. Obviously I have along way to go in learning this. Anyway though, I’m confused about what I’m supposed to do. I know you’re supposed to improvise, but how do you do that? I know what notes I’m supposed to play, but how do I play them? Should the rhythm follow a certain pattern, should it match the right hand notes? Do Ijust play whatever I feel like, or do I just play the chords as they’re written? I know these are probably dumb questions, but I’ve never taken a lesson in jazz before and I have no idea what to do.
Any help, or links to websites would be really helpful, thanks!

I need piano music!!!!?

I love to play the piano but haven’t taken lessons in a while. I really like jazz music and want to learn more jazz. I am thinking about taking lessons again but I just don’t know if I have the time. If I could just find some good sheet music that is challenging I think that would help me. I just get so frustrated because the sheet music I have is either way too easy, or Im just bored with it. I haven’t bought any new music in a while. I would say I’m maybe an intermediate level player. Any suggestions on good sheet music would be appreciated. I have never bought any online, so I am weary of that, but if someone has a good recommendation, I would consider it.
